COMBINATION REACTIONS AND EXOTHERMIC REACTIONS
Combination Reactions
These are the reactions in which two or more reactants combined together to form a single product.
Activity 1.3
Reaction between water and calcium oxide(quick lime)
- Calcium oxide reacts vigorously with water to produce slaked lime(calcium hydroxide)
- Reaction mixture becomes warm because heat has released during the reaction
Equation
- A solution of slaked lime that is calcium oxide,i.e calcium hydroxide is used for whitewashing.
- This calcium hydroxide react slowly with carbon dioxide in air to form a thin layer of calcium carbonate on the wall after 2 to 3 days of white washing and give the the shiny appearance to the walls.
EXOTHERMIC REACTIONS
- These are the reactions in which heat energy is released along with the product
- Combination reactions are exothermic reactions.
2. Respiration is also considered to be an exothermic process. During digestion food is broken down into simpler substances. For example rice, potatoes, and bread which contains carbohydrates. These carbohydrates are broken down to form glucose. This glucose combines with the oxygen present in the cell of the body and breaks down to form carbon dioxide water and energy.
3. Decomposition of vegetable matter is also considered to be an exothermic process.
